An arboretum is a collection of trees. Related collections include a
fruticetum (from the Latin frutex, meaning shrub), and a viticetum, a
collection of vines. More commonly today, an arboretum is a botanical
garden containing living collections of woody plants intended at least
partly for scientific study. Source: Wkipedia

- Innisfree is a 150-acre public garden in which the
ancient art of Chinese landscape design has been reinterpreted to
create, without recourse to imitation, a unique American garden. At
Innisfree the visitor strolls from one three-dimensional picture to
another. Streams, waterfalls, terraces, retaining walls, rocks, and
plants are used not only to define areas but also to establish tension
or motion. The 40-acre lake is glacial, most of the plant material is
native, and the rocks have come from the immediate forest.

site stretches easily into both Schoharie and Montgomery

shrubs, and herbaceous perennials from around the world. The remainder
of the property consists of natural areas, woodlands, wetlands, more

Nose Farm, homestead of founder Fred Lape. Among the Arboretum's
horticultural features are its collections of notable trees, flowering
ornamental trees and shrubs, tough trees for tough sites, conifers, and
oaks. Two old growth forests and additional natural areas representing
various stages of succession await visitors

- Mary Flagler Cary Arboretum
- Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies
- Millbrook, NY 12545
- 845 677-5343
- Mary Flagler, beneficiary of part of the Standard Oil
fortune, and her husband Melbert Cary sought respite from New York City
at their Millbrook country home. What began as a single estate grew
into over 778 hectares (1,924 aces) as the couple purchased 14 farms
and properties surrounding the Cannoo Hills west of the village. They
built a cottage, named the Tea House, atop one of the two hills and let
nature take its course. The surrounding fields and pastures became a
refuge for local wildlife. After Mr. Cary died in 1941, Mrs. Cary
tended to the property, taking a special interest in the maple trees.
In January of 2008, the Institute of Ecosystem Studies formally adopted
the name the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies.
- Mountain Top Arboretum
- Rt 23C and Maude Adams Rd
- Tannersville, NY 12485
- 518 589-3903
- The Mountain Top Arboretum is a living museum of
trees and shrubs created for the education and pleasure of the
public. Its founders, the Ahrens family, designed and planted
a seven acre mountain top area starting in 1977, to display the range
of native and exotic trees and shrubs that successfully adapt to the
rigorous climate at 2,400 feet elevation. Today we have twenty three
acres of displays in three distinct areas: the West Meadow, the
Woodland Walk, and the East Meadow. We conduct programs for the public
including the Annual Garden Fair, summer lectures, and
workshops. Self-guided tours are encouraged and guided tours
are possible by calling the Executive Director.

- The Orange County
Arboretum is located in the Thomas Bull Memorial Park, Hamptonburgh,
New York. The 35 acres of rolling former pasturelands and wooded areas
are an environmental resource and garden whose primary purpose is the
display of tree collections. These collections are placed to contribute
to a learning experience organized around botanical family
relationships, tree habitats and wetland characteristics. The wooded
borders of the six acre Al Durland Memorial Pond back the Arboretum. In
the distance visitors can view the dramatic profile of the Shawangunk
Mountains. The Arboretum offers a venue to compare and evaluate plants.
Others may look to the Arboretum as a resource for learning about plant
selections for environmental enhancements.
- Vassar College Arboretum
- Vassar College
- Poughkeepsie
- More than 230 species of trees now comprise the vast
arboretum of the Vassar campus which began with the first plantings
laid out by Matthew Vassar in 1865. The arboretum today reflects the
subsequent work of devoted Vassar horticulturists such as Professor
Emeritus of Botany Edith Roberts, Superintendent of Grounds Henry
Downer, and Sven Sward. The formal creation of the Vassar arboretum
came from a gift from the Class of 1875, a capital fund of $3,000 from
one member of the class and an endowment fund of $4,100 from the class
as a whole.
