Historic Places
Carlisle is a town in Schoharie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,758 at the 2000 census. Some say the town is named after a city in England. The Town of Carlisle is on the northern border of the county and is southwest of Amsterdam.
The town was first settled around 1760. The Town of Carlisle was established in 1807 from the Towns of Cobleskill and Sharon. Some claim the town is named after Carlisle Pierce, a resident of the town. Manufacturing plows was a town industry in the 19th Century.HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF CARLISLE

- Argusville -- A location in the northwest corner of the town on the town line.
- Bear Swamp -- A bog north of Little York.
- Becker Corners -- A hamlet in the southeast corner of the town at Cripplebush Creek.
- Carlisle -- The hamlet of Carlisle on US-20.
- Carlisle Center -- A hamlet near the south town line on County Road 10, south of Carlisle village.
- Cripplebush Creek -- A stream flowing out the east town line to Schoharie Creek.
- Grovenor Corners -- A hamlet on County Road 10 in the southeast part of the town.
- Little York -- A hamlet on US-20 at the west side of the town.
- Russell Lake -- A small lake on the town line in the southwest part of Carlisle.
