Feb 22We Hate Movies Live Screening

WEDNESDAY FEBUARY 22ND – 8:00PM - $5
Founded by members of Private Cabin, a NYC-based comedy collective, the We Hate Movies podcast (whmpodcast.com) hosts a surprise screening of one of their favorite "bad" movies. Started in late 2010, We Hate Movies specializes in humorously criticizing inept blockbusters, trashy melodramas, train-wreck comedies, and other pieces of bizarre misfit cinema. They will introduce and host a screening of a long-forgotten romantic comedy, starring none other than John Waters' favorite talk-show mistress. Come on out for some laughs and a rare screening of a would-be bad-movie classic, complete with a smattering of vintage trailers.

Feb 23Friends of OC Arboretum Invite Prospective Volunteers to Training Workshop February 23

GOSHEN – If you love Orange County’s beautiful Arboretum and have a little spare time you can give back and share with like-minded individuals, then you’ll want to attend The Friends of the Arboretum’s volunteer training workshop. Anyone interested in volunteering at the Arboretum is invited to attend the Friends’ volunteer training workshop 10 am to noon in the Arboretum’s Kosuga Greenhouse classroom Thursday, February 23.

The Friends encourage you to join their family of volunteers and share your time and talents. There are a variety of opportunities for prospective volunteers to help out at the Arboretum. Assistance is regularly needed with the gardens and greenhouse, as well as with special events and fundraisers including plant sales, classes for children and adults, and the Garden Tea Party, as well as the 9/11 Memorial Ceremony, the Holiday Boutique, and Lights in Bloom program.

“We appreciate the hard work and commitment from the Arboretum’s team of dedicated volunteers who logged more than 2,000 hours in 2011,” said County Executive Edward A. Diana. “They work hard to make these beautiful public gardens a place that everyone in our community can enjoy.”

“Volunteering with the Friends of the Arboretum is a great way to share your expertise and love of gardening and maybe even pick up a few new skills – and friends – in the process,” remarked Orange County Commissioner of Parks and Recreation Richard Rose.

For more information on volunteer opportunities, or to sign up for the training workshop, please call 845-615-3828.

The Arboretum is located within Thomas Bull Memorial Park on State Route 416 in Montgomery and is most easily accessed from the Grove St. entrance to the park. Just pull up to the motion activated gate to enter.

Voters in the Ulster County towns of Lloyd, Marlborough and Shawangunk will head to the polls on March 20 to cast ballots in a special election to fill the state’s 100th Assembly District seat.

The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Mail-in voter registration forms sent to the Ulster County Board of Elections must be postmarked no later than Feb. 24, and March 9 in the last day to register in person at the Board of Elections.

Voters can apply for an absentee ballot online at http://www.voteulster.com, by mail (Ulster County Board of Elections, 284 Wall St., Kingston, N.Y. 12401), by phone at (845) 334-5470 or by visiting the Board of Elections office.

The seat in the 100th District — which comprises parts of Ulster, Orange and Dutchess counties — became vacant when Assemblyman Thomas Kirwan, R-Newburgh, died in November.

The candidates are Democrat Frank Skartados of Marlborough, who held the seat in 2009 and 2010, and Republican John Forman, a Dutchess County legislator from Beacon.

Mar 23 - 25Taconic Opera Presents the Hilarious Don Pasquale

On the heels of performances of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale at the MET, Taconic Opera presents the opera up-close in a more intimate venue.  Comedic opera, like stand-up comedy, needs to be presented in an intimate setting.  The opera is a model of bel-canto composition which places high demands on the technique of the singer.  It features astounding patter duets, hilarious buffo dexterity, and vocal fireworks that rival the best works of Rossini.  The story centers on an old buffoon who needs to be taught a hard lesson about chasing young women.  His family and friends lead him to believe he is wedding the girl of his dreams, only to find she is his worst nightmare.

The company will present the opera from March 23-24 at 8:00pm and March 25 at 2:00pm at the Yorktown Stage, 1974 Commerce Street, Yorktown Heights, NY.  Tickets range from $15-$57, with generous discounts for seniors and students.  For complete information about the company, directions and tickets, visit the website (http://www.taconicopera.org).  Tickets also available by phone: 1-855-886-7372.

Mar 28Taconic Opera Seeking Choral Singers for Rossini’s Beloved Petite Messe Solennelle

Finishing off its 2011-2012 season and continuing its tradition of presenting an annual choral masterwork by an opera composer, Taconic Opera will be offering two performances of Petite Messe Solenelle by Gioacchino Rossini, the composer of The Barber of Seville, Cinderella (La Cenerentola), and many others.  Since this work is a favorite among choral singers, the company is extending an invitation to them to collaborate in this concert program featuring the Taconic Opera chorus, and professional lead singers and orchestra.  The concert will be conducted under the baton of Dan Montez, General Director of the Taconic Opera.

Completed in Rossini’s later years and one of very few works he offered to the public during those years, he describes with characteristic wit why he chose to write a sacred mass:  "Good God—behold completed this poor little Mass.  You know well, I was born for comic opera.  Little science, a little heart, that is all.  So may you be blessed, and grant me Paradise!”  The Emperor Napolean found the mass to be neither little (Petite), solemn (Solennelle) or even liturgical.  Audiences find this controversial but exciting work fascinating, unique, and a true pleasure for the ear and the heart to experience.

Performances are at the Ossining United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 7:30pm, and Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 3:00pm.  Chorus rehearsals will take place on 801 Kitchewan Road (Route 34) and will begin around March 28 and will continue on Saturdays from 3-5pm and Wednesdays from 7-9pm until the concert dates.  Choral singers wishing to learn the piece for the first time or eager to wipe the dust off of their old score are encouraged to join.  There are no membership fees, but singers must supply their own music.  A short, painless, friendly audition is required and will be done by appointment at a convenient time for the auditioner.  For further questions, concerns or to schedule an audition, contact Mary Corda: divamaryc@aol.com
