Hudson Valley
It is all defined by distance and who you ask.
The Hudson Valley is generally referred to as north
of
the Tappan Zee Bridge to Albany.
The Hudson Valley is actually defined by
the The Lower Hudson which includes the counties
of Westchester,
Putnam, and Rockland.
The Mid-Hudson Valley which includes the counties of
Dutchess,
Orange, and Ulster.
The Upper Hudson/Capital District which includes the
counties of Albany,
Columbia, Greene, and Rensselaer.
Bear Mountain State
Park and Harriman State Park in
parts of Rockland
and Orange
counties is about 30 miles from
NYC and is the most popular destinations in the Hudson Valley.
The Hudson Valley and The Hudson River Valley are one in
the same. Upstate the Hudson River is less in a valley.
Catskills
The Catskills is generally defined as the Catskill
Mountains which is north of NYC, south of Albany and the west side of
the Hudson River
which include the counties of Greene,
Delaware, Schoharie, Sullivan, Otsego,
and Ulster.
Catskill Park is in the Catskill Mountains,
which includes parts of four counties: Delaware, Greene,
Sullivan,
and Ulster. 41% of
the land
is owned by the state as part of the Forest
Preserve; 5% is owned by New York City to protect four of the
city’s reservoirs in the region. The park may not be used for logging
and must remain "forever wild."
Borscht Belt; an old Jewish term, used to describe the
mostly defunct summer resorts of the Catskill Mountains
in parts of
Sullivan,
Orange and Ulster

Rt 17, one day to became I86, when the upgrade
the existing NY 17 to Interstate Highway standards are completed, I-86
will extend from I-90 near Erie to the New York State Thruway (I-87) in
Woodbury. This is the major road though the Catskills to the
Delaware River.
Capital-Saratoga
The Capital District is a region in upstate NY that
includes the
4 counties surrounding Albany,
the capital of the state, Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer and
Saratoga.
This are includes the river valleys of the Hudson and Mohawk
rivers
Hudson River Region
The Hudson River is 315 miles long, starting at
Lake Tear of
the Clouds, on the slopes of Mount Marcy in the Adirondack
Mountains, and flows in the Atlantic Ocean at NYC
Harbor. As
you can see, the Hudson River Valley Region covers most of the area in
eastern NY. The areas overlap by definition. It is often just referred
to as "Up State". Interstate I87, I90 are the major highways
though the area.
This Up State region also seems to include Lake
George and the Champlain Valley, though it is not part of the Hudson
River Region.
