Historic Places

In August 1969, the Town of Bethel became the equivalent to the 3rd largest city in New York state overnight by the Woodstock Festival---3 days and nights of peace, music, and mud. Approve of it or not, it was a unique historical event unlike anything monument.jpg (20761 bytes) before or since and is probably one of the most talked about in the history of the Town. Currently, there is a monument at the site listing the performers. Some area businesses have memorabilia for sale or to view relating to this event.

Points of Interest

On March 27, 1809, by an Act of Legislature, a large portion of land was separated from the territory of Lumberland and designated as the Town of Bethel.

North White Lake became known as Kauneonga Lake (the old Indian name).

State Boat Launch - located on Route 55 in Kauneonga Lake which accesses White Lake, a 286-acre motorboat and fishing lake. Stocked with Sunnies, Brown Trout, Lake Trout and Bass. Ice Fishing contests (weather permitting). Bathrooms only in the summer.

Lake Superior State Park - located on Dr. Duggan Road between Route 17B and Route 55. (845) 794-300 ext. 3066. Operated by Sullivan County features swimming, boating and boat rentals, snack shop, showers, bathrooms, fishing and picnic facilities. Beach operated Memorial Day through Labor Day. Groups welcome, buses can be accommodated. (Electric motored boats only).

Eldred Preserve - located on Route 55 South. Sporting Clay Complex. Three stocked trout ponds, two bass lakes with boat rentals. Restaurant, bathrooms. Pay by the pound for fish caught. 1-800-557-FISH.

We feature an eclectic American based cuisine prepared by graduates of the Culinary Institute of America. We are a lakeside little cafe that features great food and blues.
