Jewett, formed in 1849 and named for Freeborn G. Jewett, a 19th-century chief justice of the New York State Court of Appeals, is in the center of an area that longtime residents call the Mountain Top. The town is entirely within the Catskill State Park,
Jewett is in the Catskill Range between Hunter Mountain and Cave Mountain aka Windham Mountain. Our community is referred to as "The Mountaintop" which includes Haines Falls, Tannersville, Elka Park, Hunter, Lexington, Maplecrest, Hensonville, Windham, Ashland & Jewett, Prattsville, Durham, Cairo.
"Scott Adams", creator of "Dilbert" grew up in this community, (Windham) and graduated from W.A.J. Central School.
We have mink, beaver, bear, blue heron, raccoon, skunk, porcupine, opossum, rabbit deer, turkey and quail....in this area. The trapping trade was once popular here. Jewett is so small it has no traffic lights. We do have a post-office and a church and a firehouse though on Route 17.
People wear many hats here and are in the logging trade, maple syrup production, bee-keeping& craft trades, carpentry, but mostly supply the two ski-resorts with labor and support workers. Catskill Ginseng is a wild crop that is harvested in the late summer/early fall in secret areas in the woods here.
Blackberries, Raspberries and Blueberries grow in abundance on the mountaintop. Wild Thyme grows profusely in the Summertime all around this mountaintop. It was not indigenous to this area until a Greek businessman shipped his goats here... At least that's the tale told to me by a local bee-keeper who explained how the honey bees pollenate whatever flora/fauna is in season and thereby influences the color and flavor variations of locally produced honey.
"The Catskill Mountains General Store" is a project providing a venue for Mountaintop proprietors and their goods to be sold on the internet. Areas not limited to the mountaintop. Jewett, I'd say is a state of mind as well as a geographical place.
