Neversink, NY 12765
Local GovernmentThe second-oldest town in Sullivan County is also a family-oriented "dry" town. Community spirit is strong, and those who need help will find the entire township ready to extend a helping hand. Those who want to try their hand at writing, or already have their hand in, will find companionship and stimulation, be it in prose or in verse. The Alchemy Club, which meets at the Daniel Pierce Library in Grahamsville, carries on a sixty-year-old tradition of writing and reading poetry and periodically publishes an anthology. The Catskill Reading Society brings writers and readers together for an annual summer OUTLOUD FESTIVAL and monthly READALOUDS in Grahamsville. The Society also publishes local and regional poets and writers. Historic Places
Points of InterestNeversink Reservoir is one of several in the Catskill Mountains that supply water to New York City and other communities along its water supply network. It is located in Sullivan County's Town of Neversink, 75 miles (120.6 km) northwest of the city. It is fed by the Neversink River, the longest tributary of the Delaware. Water collected in the reservoir in turn goes through the Neversink Tunnel a short distance east to Rondout Reservoir to be pooled with that from Pepacton and Cannonsville as well, providing nearly half of the city's daily consumption. The Neversink Reservoir a few miles distant in Sullivan County was constructed between 1941 and 1953. Water from the Pepacton, Neversink and Cannonsville Reservoirs is sent to the Rondout Reservoir by gravity via the 25-mile-long East Delaware Tunnel, the 44-mile West Delaware Tunnel and the Neversink Tunnel, which is six miles long. The combined waters are then sent to the city in the worlds longest continuous underground tunnel, the Delaware Aqueduct, which extends 85 miles from the Rondout Reservoir to Hillview Reservoir in Yonkers. The aqueduct, 1,550 feet below ground at one point, runs 600 feet beneath the Hudson River at Chelsea. The Town of Neversink is in the northeast corner of the county. The Neversink River that flows through the town is claimed to be the birthplace of American fly fishing. Aden -- A hamlet in the north part of the town. Bittersweet -- A community lost when the Neversink reservoir was constructed. Bradley -- A hamlet on the southwest side of the Neversink Reservoir. Claryville -- A hamlet by the north town line. Curry-- A hamlet west of Unionville. Eureka -- A community now covered by the Rondout Reservoir. Grahamsville -- A hamlet east of Neversink village, near the Rondout Reservoir. Lowes Corners -- A location north of the Rondout Reservoir. Neversink -- The hamlet of Neversink, formerly "Neversink Flats," was renamed after the original community was inundated by the Neversink Reservoir. The community is on Route 55. Neversink Reservoir -- A reservoir centrally located in the town. Rondout Reservoir -- A reservoir partly in the eastern area of the town. Unionville -- A hamlet west of Grahamsville. Willowemoc -- A hamlet, formerly called "Willowcanoe," near the western town line. RestaurantsLodging
