My father Joseph J Duffy was a design engineeer of the
dam.
He worked for the Board of Water Supply and in te late 50's
and 60's talked about the project and how it would affect people.
He showed me photos (I have no idea where they might be). He
talked about how several small towns would be sacraficed so that millions in
NYC would have dependable water.
He tlaked about how the damn was to be the biggest earth
filled dam of the times and he spoke of the planning-right down to the
reinterment of the dead-
I too am nostalgic for my old neighborhood so I share some of
the painful feelings.
My old house might stand, but it is not the house I knew
either. My dad also talked aoubt the jobs the dam created and the ongoing jobs
for Delaware County citizens.
It was interesting that the height of the dam was restricted
due to politics with PA rather than engineering. If the dam were five feet
higher, NYC would have fewer tramas with drought.
I never did understand why a water supply system could not
toss in some hydro power. I suppose all the engineers who worked on the dam are
long gone.
