1761

The town of Addison was founded in 1761

The town of Reading was chartered July 6, 1761

1787

Chittenden County was formed 1787

1777

In 1777 Vermont Constitution adopted

1781

Windsor County was founded in 1781.

The City of Montpelier was originally chartered in 1781

1785

The first marble quarry was started at East Dorset in 1785

1792

Franklin County was founded in 1792.

1802

Grand Isle County was founded in 1802

1830

The platform scale was invented in Saint Johnsbury, VT in 1830, when Thaddeus Fairbanks needed a way to weigh hemp.

1846

The first American-used postage stamp was made in Brattleboro in 1846.

1864

The Raid on St. Albans in 1864, when Confederates brought the Civil War home to northwestern Vermont. Confederate soldiers raid and plunder on Main Street in St. Albans, bringing the Civil War to the northern railroad town.

1872

Calvin Coolidge, 30th president, was born in Plymouth on July 4, 1872

1885

1854

Television first came to Vermont on September 26, 1954 when WCAX-TV became the first television station to begin airing local programs from its studio located on Barrett Street in South Burlington.

Rock of Ages Corporation was founded in 1885 and is an integrated granite quarrier, manufacturer and retailer whose principal product is granite memorials used primarily in cemeteries.

1976

Bill Koch of Guilford received the first Olympic medal for the US in Nordic skiing in 1976

2000

December 2000 to April 2001, yours truely lived in Montpelier while on contract to the state for a computer software upgrade.
