By an act of the State Legislature in April 1803, and taken from
the Town of Mamakating, the Town of Thompson was formed. The Village of
Monticello was incorporated in 1830.
As per the 1990 United States Census, the population of the Town
of Thompson was 13,711, up from 13,479 in 1980. The town encompasses 90.48
square miles of land with the Village of Monticello's size being approximately
3.5 square miles. The town includes the hamlets of
Rock Hill,
Harris,
Kiamesha Lake,
Thompsonville,
Glen Wild and Sackett Lake.
