A memorial to a town that was sacrificed for New York City

The following photo is from a "brief pamphlet" describing Cannonsville last "Old Home Day" dated July 4th, 1956 by the History Committee. (Mrs. Leland B. Boyd, Miss Antoinette K. Owens, Mr. & Mrs. George E. Judd)

The following postcard reads;

Airview of Cannonsville, NY showing the West Branch and the beautiful Delaware Valley, site of the latest of NY city's reservoirs. The village was named for Benjamin Cannon, Sr. who in 1790 built the first house.

One of the main settlements was where the then Gannuissa Creek, now called Trout Creek, met the west branch of the Delaware River. It was first called Dickinson City, but later was changed to Cannonsville, named after Benjamin Cannon.

When a dam constructed across the West Branch of the Delaware River was closed in 1967, the village of Cannonsville in southwestern Delaware County was flooded and the Cannonsville Reservoir was formed. The reservoir is about fifteen miles long and averages one-half mile wide. Maximum depth is about 140 feet with an average depth of 61 feet. When full, the reservoir comprises 4800 surface acres and is 1150 feet above sea level. The reservoir was created to supply water to New York City, and water is diverted to the city via the West Delaware tunnel. Water is also released into the West Branch of the Delaware River through values located at the base of the dam. These cold releases from the bottom of the reservoir have fostered an excellent trout fishery in the river below the dam. Common fish species include brown trout, smallmouth bass, brown bullhead, rock bass, yellow perch, white sucker, carp and alewife.

OH, CANNONSVILLE - And now, from the heart of our very own Delaware County singer/songwriter/guitarist, Gary Teed, we present to you a song, written over the past several weeks, from a store of memories of when he was a seven year old boy during this tumultuous time.
