The name Claverack is
a Dutch term, signifying a clover
reach or field and, according to one tradition, was applied by Henry
Hudson during his voyage up river in 1609 when the explorer noted vast
fields of white clover covering the landscape.

hamlet in the northwest corner of the
town.
Churchtown
– A hamlet on the south town line.
Claverack – The hamlet
of Claverack is in the western
part of the town.
Hollowville – A hamlet
southeast of Claverack village.
Martindale
– A hamlet by the east town line, by the Taconic State Parkway.
Mellenville
– A hamlet in the northeast part of the town, west of Philmont.
Philmont
– The Village of Philmont in the northeast part of the town.
Red Mills – A location
east of Claverack village.
Upper Hollowville – A
hamlet between Hollowville and
Martindale.

The Claverack Library was founded in 1891.
The Columbia county seat was originally at Claverack,
but moved
to Hudson in
1805, where it is today.

History
- Today the Town of Claverack is still relatively
undeveloped. It retains
many architectural reminders of the various periods of its history.

- Erected 1788, Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, other
prominent lawyers
tried cases here. Martin Van Buren admitted to bar here. Court moved to
Hudson in 1805.
