The Hudson Valley refers to all
areas and towns
along the Hudson
River, including the Bronx or even Bergen
County, New Jersey.
However, this definition is not commonly used and the Tappan Zee Bridge
is often considered the southern limit of the Hudson
Valley. New York
state defines the Hudson Valley region on the Thruway
as Exit 9, Tarrytown
though 21A, Berkshire Section/to Mass Pike.
The Catskills
is the hilly area in New
York state
northwest of New York City and southwest of Albany, on the west
side of the Hudson river, and east of the Poconos. The Mountains into
Upstate New York are not part of the Appalachian Mountains,
though The Appalachian
Trail, skirts though NY at Bear Mountain.
The Hudson Valley region is rich in History. The
Hudson River is 315-mile long. From Mount Marcy,
Lake Tear of the Clouds, is the purported source of the
Hudson to Battery Park in Manhattan. Poughkeepsie
is the northern point of the salt line carried by the
tidal currents.
There are 6,713 natural ponds, lakes and
reservoirs
of one acre or more.
The Bear
Mountain Bridge is the oldest of the five spans,
having opened in 1924. It was followed by the Mid-Hudson (Poughkeepise)
in 1930, the Rip Van Winkle (connects Catskill, Greene County and Hudson, Columbia County) in
1935, the Kingston-Rhinecliff (connects Rhinecliff in Dutchess County to Kingston in Ulster County) in 1957,
the north span of the Newburgh-Beacon in 1963 and the south span of the
Newburgh-Beacon in 1980. The
Kingston-Rhinecliff is the highest of the five bridges, rising about
200 feet above the water at its peak.
