Historic PlacesThe following information was provided by the Town of Plattekill There were no civil organization of the lands which embrace Plattekill until after the Palatines settled in 1709 where Newburgh is now located. In 1710 the Precinct of Highlands was formed with the land limits undefined The organization of the territory remained the same until 1743 when three precincts were formed; Wallkill, Shawangunk and Highland. Highland Precinct embraced what is now Marlboror, Plattekill, Newburgh and New Windsor. The precinct of the Highlands continued in existence until 1762 when it was divided into the precincts of Newburgh and New Windsor. The Newburgh precinct emcompassed what is now the city and town of Newburgh in Orange County and the towns of Marlboro and Plattekill in Ulster County.This was changed in 1772 when the new Marlborough precinct was divided from the Newburgh precinct. The precinct of New Marlborough, comprised of Plattekill and Marlboro, become a town in 1788. By an act of the Legislature of the State of New York, the Town of Plattekill was divided from Marlborough and become the ninth town to be formed in Ulster County, on the 21st of March, 1800. Points of InterestThe town's name was taken from a stream, the Platte Kill, whose source was northwest of the village of Plattekill - the site of the "Ancient Indian Dam." The Plattekill town government is made up of the elected positions of supervisor, town clerk, four councilmen, highway superintendent and two justices of the peace. The Town of Plattkill, is half way between Highland and New Paltz...Route 44/55 goes through it...... the Town of Plattekill is home to just over 10,000 residents and consists of five small hamlets. The hamlet of Ardonia is primarily agricultural; Clintondale is comprised of several small businesses and farmland. The hamlet of Modena is considered the center of the town and is the location of the Library, Town Hall and the Highway Department. RestaurantsLodging
