Living to 140 thru UndernutritionJust imagine this. We have all evolved into a Methusalah-like society. Not to 900-plus years, as in the Bible, but living to a healthy active 140 or more. Middle age starting at 70 with teenage extending to age 30. Science fiction fantasy? Not by a long shot. Almost doubling the maximum life span of humanity can be a very real likelihood, states Roy L. Walford M.D., professor of pathology at Los Angeles Medical College, University of California in his extensively researched book MAXIMUM LIFE SPAN (Horton $15.50). His studies show that undernutrition, restricting calories without causing malnutrition, can extend almost everyone's life span. Reducing calories so that a person stays 15 percent below his ideal weight is the goal. All important nutrients, vitamins, minerals, etc., are still consumed. Dr. Walford and other medical scientists indicate that long-term animal studies prove! conclusively, if calories are restricted and nutritional quality of food improved, that the aging process is slowed down, with consequent life span extension. One hundred-thirteen is the oldest scientifically recorded age for any human. Reports of Hunzas, Ecuadorians, Turks and Russians living to 120 and more have never been verified. For the past several centuries, life expectancy has gradually increased. The average American today can expect to live into his or her 70's. Some critics complain that undernutrition requires following a starvation diet. NOT SO. It becomes a question of personal priorities, what YOU consider more important, overeating, smoking, drinking, plus rich desserts, OR improving vision, hearing, physical well-being, mental clarity and sexual vigor into an advanced age. Dr. Walford's personal undernutrition program includes fasting 2 days. weekly with some vitamins and minerals. (I personally, have found that fasting once weekly, with several 3 to 4 day fasts yearly, has kept me in top notch health all of my adult life). His weight is 143 at 5 ft. 8' and his aim is reducing to 130. He runs 8 to 10 miles weekly, swims' and does weight lifting exercises for his general health and muscle tone. How does undernutrition affect the aging process? Dr. Walford's book explains that an important part of aging is caused by a process whereby the immunity system becomes unbalanced. Undernutrition prevents that from happening. it also lowers body temperature slightly which helps to extend life span. This mean just being kept alive longer as an invalid or vegetable. A person age 90 would have the health, vigor and appearance of a person of 50 or 60 today. This concept of a longer living nation would be bound to have deep socioeconomic, educational and health advantages, For example;
