Third Monday Lecture at The Woodstock Artists Association 7pm 6 bucks at the door coffee and goodies inside NOV.21 2005 “Doris Licht on the career of the Ceramic Artist” “The common thread that runs through my work is a concern with the past and memories; i.e. a visual diary. Some important influences on my work have been: growing up in the car and motorcycle culture of Los Angeles, being introduced to clay at the Otis Art Institute while Peter Voulkos taught there, working in a pottery in Japan in 1971 and finally, the experience of working on the Bowery in NYC for the past 25 years. I have been working in clay, making drawings, and taking photographs for many years. Ceramics was my first medium, and by using the camera to record my work, the photographs eventually became the work itself, as I began to use photography to record my inner life rather than objects. I taught Graduate Ceramics at Pratt Institute in NYC from 1973 until 2002 when I moved to Woodstock, NY. I now have my studio here in Woodstock where I work” and teach. Doris Licht P.O. "My first gallery position was with the Ira Spanierman Gallery in l967. That was followed by becoming assistant director of the Forum Gallery. I then became associate director of the AM Sacks Gallery (now the Perlow Gallery), and subsequently became director of the Tibor de Nagy, Max Hutchinson and Landmark galleries. While at the Landmark Gallery, I began presenting workshops on Art & Awareness - Different Ways of Looking at Art (parts of which were broadcast on NPR’s All Things Considered). Now a full time resident of Woodstock, I am inspired by the many gifted painters, sculptors and photographers in this area, and after many years I am returning to my passion for art with this collector's exhibition."
